Primary 83 - Psalms and Hymns
Class,
For nearly two hundred years we have sung hymns of praise and warship. The poems we sing are songs of praise, of hope, and of warning. We sing about the sacrament, of repentance, of faith, and celebration. We sing of our pre-existence, trials, and of a kingdom yet to come.
Brothers and sisters, we are no different than the saints of the past. For five hundred years the saints of the old testament, our ancestors, have written songs of praise too that we're used for thousands of years. Jesus referred to the psalms because he probably sang them often. We sing songs from primary as often as adults sing hymns.
Psalms we sing to recognizable tunes and like most music, one person wrote the lyrics and another the songs. Sometimes the song tune is lost but the poem isn't and that would describe the psalms.
Like in all things, music can be used for good and bad. Satan loves to take the things we love and put an evil twist by putting certain words or descriptions of things that pull us farther away from God. We should take great care of what we listen to because it can affect our thoughts, words, and actions.
Music is a great motivator and helps us remember the scriptures, the Sabbath, the Savior, and the teachings of the prophets, and drives us to do the right things when we need the Spirit's help.
Here is an example,
Choose the right when a choice is placed before you.
In the right the Holy Spirit guides;
And its light is forever shining o’er you,
When in the right your heart confides.
Did you hum? Perhaps the tune came to mind. See, music moves and inspires you. It can you in the right frame of mind to receive further light and knowledge. This is why we sing specific hymns before we partake of the sacrament. Take this week as you learn about the psalms and how those helped the saints of ancient times remember the Lord as our song does for us.
