Primary 36 - Council with the Lord
This week we are talking about counciling with the Lord. You may wonder why we would council with an all knowing, ever present and all powerful God. Shouldn't He just tell us what to do?
Remember what we said about needed council or instruction versus wanted council or instruction? Do you remember the brother of Jared? He needed instruction on breathable air in his travel but also wanted light in each boat. When he asked for one there was exact instruction while the other the Lord sent the prophet away to think it over, form a plan, execute his plan and seek the Lord for what he lacked.
You and I were in the first and great council. Could God our Father done all the work? Sure but would we have been invested as much if the work was done for us versus if we were involved? Think about it. You and we were part of the plan. We came to Father with what we thought could help in our mortality because we loved the plan, the Savior and our Father (Palms 82:1 & 6; John 10).
Some ask what are we supposed to do with this life to follow Heavenly Father's plan? The prophet Joshua said:
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9)
We are taught to "Do what is right; let the consequence follow" (Hymn 237). We encourage you to always council with your Father. As He has commanded, Pray always (D&C 10:5; 19:38; 3 Nephi 18:19). He has also communicated this through music. Songs such as, "I need the every hour", "Did you think to pray?", or "Sweet Hour of Prayer" just to name a few.
When you pray, show thanks to Father for His gifts and tender mercy, voice your concerns than council with Him and listen for an answer. Last week we talked about doing such things at the temple when we are ready for the temple. Now, now is the time to do this at home to prepare for the temple. Pray, council and show thanks to our Heavenly Father showing that you want to be ready for the temple.
Like the brother of Jared, pray and council with the Lord. You will get explicit instructions like a need for air but to if you want light in your boat called life, work for it and than share the light you receive.
One more thing, we council with each other in the church. We are a church with meetings. Some of you may have parents who have callings that lead to meetings. Like counciling with Heavenly Father, we council with each other to strengthen and edify. You may have council with your family and your priesthood holder or oldest person in your family is the head and they listen to everyone to strengthen your family. Leaders will make good decisions when Heavenly Father is part of the council.
God will help you always just ask. Have a great week and know we love you.
